Accelerated Reader Information for Parents
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a web-hosted computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor student independent reading practice. Students need regular reading practice to improve their skills. The student selects a book (from over 130,000 titles) at his/her individual reading level, reads at their own pace, and then takes a short reading comprehension quiz on the computer at school. Our goal at St. Louise is for each student to succeed at achieving their individual goal while reading what they choose.
Every book is given a point value. The point value is computed based on the difficulty of the book (reading level or book level) and the length of the book (number of words). The teacher sets the student's individual goal each marking period (every trimester). AR keeps track of the student's reading practice toward his/her goal and communicates it to parents and teachers.
AR also provide diagnostic reports on student difficulties for teachers. At St. Louise, we do use earned AR points towards goals as part of the Reading/Language Arts grade each quarter.
Accelerated Reader is used throughout the country by schools from K to 12th
grade. Consequently, not all titles with AR quizzes are suitable or appropriate for our students. Books in our school library are selected to be enjoyable and appropriate for K-8 grade students. Both your child's teacher and the librarian can also provide guidance to students in selecting books. Students will need your guidance as parents if they select books from home or other sources.
